Our Last and Best Chance to Stop the Destructive Line 5 Oil Pipeline
Our advocacy is working! Thanks to the recent work of grassroots advocates like you, Michigan is opening a special comment period to invite public input on the expansion of Line 5, tunneling under the Great Lakes. Anyone who cares about climate, clean water, or local communities is invited to speak up, no matter where you live. The Trump administration and oil giant Enbridge are doing everything they can to extend the life of this dangerous, 72-year-old pipeline. Now we have a real chance to stop them.
Canadian Oil giant Enbridge wants to extend a lifeline to its more than 70-year-old Line 5 pipeline by tunneling under the Great Lakes at the Straits of Mackinac. This six-year project would come at the expense of the Straits’ pristine water, endangering aquatic life and disrupting recreation like fishing, kayaking, and hiking.
While the Trump administration is trying to fast track this project by declaring a sham “energy emergency,” the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has the power to protect Michigan and the Great Lakes by denying these permits. Granting Enbridge a permit for its proposed tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac would be a disaster for the communities impacted by construction, and would introduce the risk of an even greater catastrophic disaster should the pipeline rupture and spill oil into the Great Lakes.
Submit your comment now, before the August 29 deadline, calling on the State of Michigan to reject Enbridge’s permit for its proposed tunnel under the Great Lakes for a pipeline that should already be shut down!
Take action to protect the Great Lakes before the August 29 comment deadline!
